CIBA Coffee Break: Get to Know Your Association

CIBA offers programs and services to Canadian independent booksellers and their advocates in order to support the strengthening of the independent bookselling sector. We are also the meeting place for booksellers and industry colleagues to build connections that will advance the promotion and sale of books through Canadian independent bookstores.

We're thrilled to launch our Lectures and Labs Series, designed to enhance the professional capabilities of booksellers. These sessions will cover a range of topics, addressing both timely concerns and the ongoing challenges that booksellers and their various partners are facing, while creating opportunities to strengthen the sector. I Read Canadian Day is a national day of celebration of Canadian books for young people. Taking place on February 17, 2021, this event will empower families, schools, libraries, bookstores and organizations to host activities and events that encourage young people to read, or be read, a Canadian children's book of their choice.

Booksellers are invited to participate by creating displays, hosting authors and supporting the initiative on their website and social media channels. For more information, and to download promotional materials, visit our website.

Launched in the summer of 2020, the Time to #ReadAtlantic Campaign has seen great success connecting readers to books published in the Atlantic. Spearheaded by the Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association (APMA), this multi-faceted initiative created themed, curated reading lists with books published by APMA members.

The objective of this campaign was to support the 'Atlantic book ecosystem', from the author to the publisher to local retailers. Throughout the summer books featured on the atlanticbooks.ca website had an impressive 36,000 views which resulted in 8,986 external click throughs to partner (library and bookstore) websites.

Ontario-based small businesses that have been required to close or restrict their services can now apply for one-time funding worth between $10,000 and $20,000 through the new Ontario Small Business Support Grant.

To qualify for the emergency funding, a business must:

  • Have been required to close or restrict services starting Dec. 26.
  • Have fewer than 100 employees.
  • Have experienced a 20 per cent or greater decrease in revenue in April 2020 compared to April 2019 (businesses started after April 2019 can choose a different month for the comparison).

Starting at $10,000 for all eligible businesses, the grant provides businesses with funding to a maximum of $20,000 to help cover decreased revenue expected as a result of the Provincewide Shutdown. Businesses will be able to use the support in whatever way makes the most sense for them. For example, some businesses could use the support to pay employee wages, while others may need support maintaining their inventory.
