Statement of Principles

Code of Conduct

The Canadian Independent Booksellers Association (CIBA) is committed to providing an environment in which all members, staff, and other organizations and individuals interacting with the CIBA community are treated with respect and dignity. We are committed to inclusivity and the reduction of barriers due to discrimination, including, but not limited to, on the grounds of race, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, gender identity or expression, age, colour, disability or political or religious belief.

Harassment, including bullying, discrimination, and personal or sexual harassment will not be tolerated from any person participating in CIBA programs, meetings, events, or other activities related to the association.

A person violating this Code of Conduct will be required to leave a CIBA event, may lose the privilege of attending future CIBA events, and may face expulsion from the organization by a meeting of the board of directors or the membership under the bylaws of the corporation.

Statement of Principles

The Canadian Independent Booksellers Association (CIBA) is committed to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. We believe that all people have the right to be treated equally, and with respect. Prejudicial treatment based on race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, nationality, immigration status, or birthplace, is abhorrent and wrong.

Territorial Acknowledgment

As Canadians, we are deeply indebted to past and present Indigenous peoples. We encourage our members to acknowledge the traditional territory upon which they reside, to educate themselves on the history and treatment of Indigenous peoples in this country, and to reflect on their relationship with Indigenous communities today. Our active work toward reconciliation includes celebrating the depth and breadth of the work of Indigenous writers. It is our honour and responsibility to support Indigenous literature in this country, and we aim to do so through learning opportunities, partnerships, and community building.
